Dave’s Thoughts

“We cannot direct the wind, but we can adjust the sails”

“We cannot direct the wind, but we can adjust the sails”

Please think about this…What we ponder and what we think about sets the course of our life. Any day we wish; we can discipline ourselves to change it all. Any day we wish, we can open the book that will open our mind to new knowledge.  Any day we wish, we can start a new activity.  Any day we wish, we can start the process of life change.

We can do this immediately, or next week, or next month, or next year. We can also do nothing. We can pretend rather than perform, and if the idea of having to change ourselves makes us uncomfortable, we can remain as we are.  This is the problem many businesses across the country are facing.  It is in our nature to not like change but change is happening look around you.  The world has changed.  Media has changed.  What are businesses doing to change the way they reach potential customers?

This is something every President, Vice President and CEO should be asking themselves.  With today’s economy it is pivotal to have a solid business and advertising strategy (one that might be different from a year ago and one that is most certainly different from that of five years ago).

I leave you with this, let the wind blow in whatever direction it wants, just be prepared to adjust your sails…

Play to Win.

Self…

“Sweep the leg Johnny, no mercy!”

Self evaluation is always a difficult thing and as I have said many times, a righteous man is not righteous until tested. In other words there is a difference between knowing the path and walking the path.  After writing my last entry I received some responses that asked which “one” was I. Well I like to believe I am a byproduct of the Quote from “Any Given Sunday”.   I like to think I came up the hard way and made it inch by inch believing hard work and dedication was the answer.  The email was not a trap; I believe there are philosophical differences between generations that you must understand. I also whole heartily believe every day we choose who we are with our choices and our actions.  I just think these choices and actions should be much more cognizant.

“Why am I here,  MITCH AND MURRAY asked me to do them a favor”

What would you do if you didn’t think you would get caught or how far would you wander from “who you are” if it was a directive from your boss?  What would you do for personal gain?  It is strange that I reference a cartoon as if they’re real ( my first crush, Betty Ruble)  but Consider Popeye. Although he had bad taste in women he was ahead of his time philosophically “I yam what I yam”! Notice that he didn’t say, “I yam what I want others to think I yam” or “I yam what others want me to be”. He said, “I yam what I yam”, yes you are!

So my challenge last week … figure out our ‘yam-ness’. Each “role” we assume in life has expectations, ways that others expect us to be. Expectations come from everywhere, jobs, life roles, education, past achievements, friends and family.  With all of these “things” and I do believe most of us act differently with different people, it can be very difficult to determine who we are.

Popeye’s perspective is not perfect. His complete thought is, “I yam what I yam and that’s all that I yam.” Simple but somewhat flawed.  It is completely possible we reconstruct ourselves.  I think there is who we are, who others think we are, who we want to be and who we are with that influences all that.

So I believe the question was…who am I?
